Mosaic Forest Management Announces Extended Agreement for Rowing Canada Aviron Training Centre at Quamichan Lake

Nanaimo, BC – Mosaic Forest Management has renewed an agreement with the Municipality of North Cowichan to support a planned rowing facility on Quamichan Lake. The agreement allows access to Mosaic’s lakebed to install the key infrastructure needed for a new National Training Centre. The facility will be operated by Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA).

“The National Training Centre will offer significant economic and recreational benefits to the Cowichan area. We appreciate the opportunity to support the Municipality of North Cowichan and Rowing Canada Aviron with this ambitious and worthwhile initiative knowing it will contribute to Rowing Canada’s ongoing success,” said Molly Hudson, Director of Sustainability at Mosaic Forest Management.

Quamichan Lake is a shallow, protected body of water well-suited as the base for a high-performance training program. Mosaic’s agreement with the Municipality of North Cowichan facilitated the installation of a six-lane, 2000-metre racecourse as phase one of the National Training Centre.  New docks, including a public access dock, were recently installed to improve access to Quamichan Lake for rowers and for local residents as the project’s second phase.

“This new training facility is a valuable asset to our community, contributing to delivering world-class sport and recreation experiences for residents and visitors,” said Municipality of North Cowichan Mayor, Rob Douglas.

“We’re excited to partner with Mosaic to help facilitate recreational and competitive rowing and much more,” said Adam Parfitt, High Performance Director of RCA. “The docks will improve lake access for everyone. This is just the first part of our vision for a centre which will provide a safe and welcoming environment for high performance athletes and for local residents, including youth, seniors, people with disabilities and members of the Indigenous community."

The plan for the training centre also includes the construction of a shell house for the storage of rowing
equipment and a dryland training centre. It will be used to host annual small boat selection
competitions and training camps and is expected to inspire interest in community and high-school
rowing.

The dock, which was just completed this month as part of the rowing facility, provides public access to Quamichan Lake for canoeing, fishing and other recreational activities.
