Seedling Donation Supports Home-Based Ecology Programming for Vancouver Island Youth

Nanaimo, BC — Mosaic Forest Management has donated 1000 Douglas-fir seedlings to the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region's Youth Program, a program designed to teach students the importance of environmental, social, cultural, and economic sustainability on a local scale.

Typically, the program hosts in-person educational workshops for youth, but these activities have been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The seedling donation will allow the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Youth Program to continue their work through a new home-based program.

“With Mosaic’s generous donation, we will be launching a tree planting activity that teaches youth how to grow Douglas fir seedlings with the help of a guide,” said Mandy Hobkirk, Coordinator of the MABR Youth Program. “The donation allows for enough seedlings to ensure each participating household can receive multiple seedlings at no charge, and we will deliver the seedlings contact-free.”

“Douglas-fir is an iconic tree species that contributes significantly to the economy and ecology of British Columbia,” said Mosaic forester Chelsey Toth. “Mosaic planted 9.3 million Douglas-fir seedlings this Spring, and we are pleased to contribute to this program that will bring trees to Vancouver Island backyards.”

Youth interested in participating in this program can register free of charge at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mabr-youth-tree-planting-activity-tickets-103738025226, or find more information on the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region website at https://mabr.ca/at-home-activities.
