News & Views from Mosaic I Winter 2022

This update summarizes Mosaic’s activities for the latter part of 2022. We welcomed Rob Gough as Mosaic’s new President and CEO, following his previous role as Mosaic’s Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.  Under Rob’s leadership, Mosaic continued to advance its sustainable forest management practices and community efforts while remaining focused on safety and wellness.

Thank you for welcoming me to my new role. It’s an exciting time to be in the forestry sector, with Mosaic continuing to show its leadership in the industry.

We’re making excellent progress with how we deliver sustainability and value from the land base. The BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative, launched earlier this year, is one of Mosaic’s most significant projects to date. A portion of revenue from the carbon credits will flow to the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas Innovation Program to support scientific and First Nations cultural research on and around the project lands.

We also continued to help people recreate safely and, in more ways, through new access agreements with All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) groups, mountain bike clubs, and Search and Rescue organizations. Our fourteenth campground opened to the public this year. Located near Port Alberni, ʕaʔuk ʔaama k̓anis/Loon Lake also has a fully accessible dock to help everyone enjoy the surrounds.

Supporting efforts that help strengthen our communities remained an important focus for Mosaic. It was amazing to see staff exceed our fundraising goal during this year’s United Way Campaign. We also donated $40,000 through our third annual Season of Giving initiative, benefitting food banks and school lunch programs. At year’s end, Mosaic will have shared over half a million dollars with community groups in our operating areas and neighbouring communities.

Our commitment to making an impact extended to our work on diversity, equity and inclusion and reconciliation. Mosaic remains focused on building a culture of awareness and understanding, with cooperation and mutual respect at the heart of all our activities. We’ll continue to help ensure shared successes with our partners, employees, and contractors.

These accomplishments were possible because of Mosaic’s exceptional team of professionals and contractor workforce driving our business. Thank you to everyone for their commitment to safety and sustainability throughout the year.

I hope your holiday season is filled with joy and happiness. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and healthy New Year.

- Rob

Mosaic Forest Management announced the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative earlier this year. Through a high-quality, nature-based carbon credit program, the initiative will defer harvesting on 40,000 hectares of private land for 25 years, potentially longer.

The carbon credits generated by BigCoast Forest will be certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the world's most widely used and rigorous voluntary carbon program. Validation and verification of the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISTa) is occurring in parallel. We anticipate the carbon credits will be issued in the coming weeks.

A portion of the sale of the carbon credits proceeds will go to the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Innovation Program to support scientific and First Nations cultural research.
