News & Views from Mosaic I Winter 2023

I am pleased to present this news update highlighting Mosaic's accomplishments and activities for 2023.

Safety, sustainability and community are paramount to Mosaic. We prioritize reducing the medical incident rate year over year, trending to meet our 2023 target to ensure everyone goes home safely. We did all this while providing over 2,000 jobs for our team in the forest and supplied dozens of local mills. Mosaic planted 10.3 million seedlings of local species as part of our commitment to plant at least two trees for every one harvested within the first year of harvest.

We are thrilled to share we achieved Progressive Aboriginal Relations Gold Certification from the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business, making Mosaic the first and only timberland owner in Canada to achieve this standard of excellence. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) awarded Mosaic the 2023 SFI Leadership in Conservation Award, recognizing our work to mitigate climate change and our early and enthusiastic adoption to advance SFI's climate smart forestry objective, including creating the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative. We are pleased to report that Mosaic was again named one of BC’s Top Employers for 2023 for the second consecutive year.

Mosaic continues to prioritize recreational opportunities for our neighbours with over 125 formal access agreements that allow hiking, mountain biking, research, beekeeping, fishing, ATV use and other access requests, such as our partnership with the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club and sponsoring the BC Bike Race. The Parksville Museum opened the Mosaic Pavilion this summer, a new exhibit celebrating the proud history and bright future of forestry on Vancouver Island.

Giving back to the communities where we live, work and play is a core value of our organization. Our incredible staff raised close to $70,000 for the United Way. During the holiday season, we are proud to support 40 community and school food programs throughout Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii with Mosaic's fourth annual Season of Giving Campaign. Funds support organizations doing the important work of reaching those in need. By the end of the year, we will have shared over half a million dollars with community groups.

Our accomplishments demonstrate our strides in ensuring sustainability for the company, forestry, and our neighbours. All of this is possible thanks to our exceptionally dedicated employees and contractor workforce. We are grateful for their commitment to sustainability and safety.

I wish you and your loved ones a safe and wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a happy new year.

Sincerely,
Rob

BIGCOAST FOREST CLIMATE INITIATIVE UPDATE

Mosaic announced the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative in March 2022. Though the project launched in March 2022, the first credits were officially issued in March 2023 under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the world’s most widely used and rigorous voluntary carbon program. Additional certifications include grouped project status to allow First Nations and other woodlot owners to participate in Mosaic's initiative. BigCoast Forest was also certified to the SDGs Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) for directly contributing to five SDGs.

We continue to work with the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Innovation Program and First Nations with an interest in the 40,000 hectares to advance the stewardship of nature, and work to design more sustainable local economies. It’s exciting work supported by a portion of the revenue from the initiative going to the IPCA Innovation Program and the Pacific Salmon Foundation for cultural and scientific research.
